Hello, my name is Leoni Karunaratne, I am a second year Law Student and an aspiring Barrister. I am running for the position of Treasurer for the 2018-2019 Inns of Court Committee.
My recent volunteer work at the Inns of Court inter-varsity mooting competition provided me with the hands-on experience, needed for this role. By working alongside the current committee, this provided me with insight into how this committee’s work supports and enhances the personal and professional development of Students.
As treasurer, I intend to efficiently manage the allocated budget in order to improve the quality of current skill-based events and increase the number of events being offered. I will work on ensuring that enough opportunities are provided for students to develop transferable skills that they can apply to any career path; whether they are a Student looking to pursue a legal profession or if they are currently exploring future opportunities.
I spent some time working for one of Canadas largest non-profit organizations which provided me with valuable experience coordinating fundraising campaigns and developing financial strategies to optimize the benefits of the campaign. Some of the fundraising campaigns I managed included; The Premier and Cabinet offices for the province of Ontario and the Ministry of the Attorney General. I learned what was required to run a successful campaign, oversee financial statements, implement fundraising strategies and manage fundraising accounts.
I have experience working in the corporate environment through my employment at one of Canada’s largest Property and Casualty Insurer, where I held roles in both the Claims Department and the Personal Lines Underwriting department. As a representative of the company, I provided excellent customer service while handling large volumes of accounts which I was responsible for. I am also detail oriented as I needed to ensure accuracy when working with large sums of money and financial transactions to vendors.
As the President of the Liberty Halls Committee, I gained experience supporting the needs of my fellow Students. As President, I have excellent leadership and organizational skills which enables me to make decisions and provide follow ups in a timely manner. As the main point of contact for Students and a liaison between Liberty Point and the Student Union, I have strengthened my communication and interpersonal skills.
I strongly believe that it is crucial to have the right leadership in place for the success of any society. Together with the members of the incoming committee, I intend to apply my skills, knowledge and experience to ensure the continuation of well-balanced accounts. I propose to do this by tracking expenditures through accessible up to date records, which will enable in the successful operation of this society, to provide Students with a fun, memorable and opportunistic University experience in order to grow and develop.
