For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Zahra and I’m running to be Academic Events Co-ordinator for the Inns of Court Committee 2019-2020.
I’m currently on a year abroad at the University of Ottawa in Canada but was President of Inns in my second year so know a fair bit about how the society works.
My previous experience means that I have a bit of an INNsight (the bad puns will never not be funny) on the events we run and the best way to organise them.
The academic events including the trips to the Inns of Court, the annual Supreme Court Trip and Panel events with members of the bar were, for me, one of the best parts of my first 2 years at Southampton. As an aspiring barrister I understand the importance of making these events easily accessible for all years and ensure they are planned early so they can be fit into a busy schedule that often follows the pattern of lecture, Westlaw, tutorial, sleep and repeat! This is something I haven’t missed during my year in Canada but will no doubt have to get used to again 😦
One of the downsides of doing a year abroad means that I’m probably going to be a loner so being on committee will hopefully help me make friends within the law school community. I hope to be able to carry on offering the great events we have been in the past as well as using our great list of contacts to allow fellow students to learn as much about the Bar as possible.
I feel that I would be able to approach people comfortably and confidently to organise the best academic events for you and would be interested to hear what events you would like to see more of, or even suggestions for something new – I’m open to all ideas!
I hope this has given you a bit more info about why I believe I would be a good academic events co-ordiantor.
P.S Please help me make friends :)) xx
