Today we were joined by none other than Chris White – the founder of Aspiring Solicitors.
Aspiring Solicitors is an organisation which works closely with employers, legal professionals and law schools across the country with the aim of increasing diversity within the legal profession.
In the first hour of Chris’s visit, he spoke to us about why and how his organisation came to be. He took us through the realities of the application process; knowledge which he has acquired both through his time in practice, and as an applicant himself. Chris also passed on some staggering statistics about the current state of diversity in the legal profession; did you know, that less than 3% of Partners in UK law firms are black? Or, that only about 27% are female? These are stats which, in the twenty-first century in particular, are truly shocking. They go to show, as Chris pointed out, that the profession has a long way to go in terms of increasing its diversity. It was not all doom and gloom, however. Chris finished his talk on a high emphasising the importance of academic performance and being happiness in your chosen profession, whatever it may be.
After the lecture, a select few were chosen to participate with Chris in mock-interview scenarios. Members were taken through the whole process from start to finish – from how to make a good first impression, right through to whether, or not, to ask any questions at the end of your interview.
We hope all who attended found the talk as beneficial as we did. Good luck to everyone applying for Training Contracts this year – we hope this event helped!
